Myrtle Beinhauer contributed much to many in her lifetime. Born in Iowa, she was enriched in her Norwegian heritage. Myrtle received a BA from Drake University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota. She taught at Drake University, and later taught at Western Michigan University. She served as chair of the Business and Economics Department at Olivet College where she also taught for eight years.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Myrtle served as Director for Economics Education in Michigan. She was a member of the Michigan Women's Commission and was instrumental in forming the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) in Kalamazoo. Askeladden Lodge owes much to Myrtle as she helped to bring many together to charter the lodge in September 1988. She served as the lodge's first president.

It is because of Myrtle's interest in young people and her benevolence to the chapter that the Askeladden Lodge is able to offer students an opportunity to receive a scholarship in her name.
